DOSHI Gallery

SAM makes art enjoyable and accessibleThe Doshi Center for Contemporary Arts was founded in 1972 by Maya Schock, along with a group of community volunteers. "Doshi" is a Japanese word meaning "brotherhood." Still run by a group of local artists serving in a volunteer capacity, the Doshi maintains its original mission - to highlight new and inventive work by emerging and established artists. In 1997, the Doshi was incorporated into the Susquehanna Art Museum as the Doshi Gallery for Contemporary Art.

The Doshi Gallery features about ten exhibits per year. All of the works exhibited are chosen by a panel of jurors, and a majority of the works on display are available for purchase.

Exhibiting at the DOSHI

All artists who are residents of Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, York, Adams, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Schuylkill, Northumberland, Montour, Union, Snyder, Lycoming, Columbia, Sullivan, Luzerne, Wyoming, or Lackawanna Counties are eligible for participation in the jurying process. The next selection will be in 2009.

Submission guidelines are as follows:
• All artists must submit up to 20 slides or 20 digital images on a single disc.
• Digital images must be JPGs measuring at least 4” by 4” with a resolution of 300 DPI or higher.
• All artists must submit a current artist’s statement and CV with their work.
• All slides and digital images on disc must be identified with the artist’s name, the title of the piece and the medium.
• A written list of images must accompany your submission, including the title, the medium, the date, the dimensions, and the value of each piece submitted.
• No artist may have had a solo exhibition in the DOSHI Gallery in the last four years.
• A signed Exhibition and Incoming Loan Agreement must be completed.

Selected artists will fill eight exhibition periods per year (each period will be four to five weeks in length). Scheduling for the 2010-2011 exhibitions calendar will take place in 2009 at the discretion of the Susquehanna Art Museum.

The DOSHI Gallery retains a 40% commission on works sold. Please contact exhibitions manager Amy Hammond at 717-233-8668 x 4 if you have any questions.

Invitations for juried thematic group exhibits are sent periodically to members, so if you are interested in them, become a Museum member today!

Doshi Administrators and Volunteers

The Doshi Gallery is administered by a group of volunteers serving on the Doshi Gallery Steering Committee, which meets every two months. The Steering Committee reports to the Susquehanna Art Museum's Board of Directors and works directly with the SAM staff. The Committee determines the exhibition schedule, installs exhibits, plans special events, and acts as a forum for ideas about contemporary art. If you are interested in taking part, send us your name and telephone number either by email, by visiting or calling the Museum at 717-233-8668.
