Youth
The Susquehanna Art Museum’s youth art programs
explore drawing, sculpture, painting, art history, and art appreciation
and provide a quality art education experience where students have
the opportunity to learn from original works of art in a museum
setting. All classes provide a forum where self-exploration, experimentation,
and cultivating a sense of inquiry are integral parts of the educational
experience.
SAM’s
instructors are Pennsylvania certified art educators, and curriculum
is designed around current exhibitions, important artists and artistic
movements, and specific art media. Each session provides a brand
new experience.

Examples of classes include:
- Create Your Own Masterpiece Workshops (ages 3-12):
These one-day workshops address specific artists, artistic movements,
and media and provide talking points for a deepened understanding
of a student’s developing skills and self-expression.
- Museum Experience Workshops (ages 5-12): These
one-day workshops provide an opportunity to explore SAM’s
current exhibition. After
touring the exhibit, students will use examples from the work
seen to frame questions about the creative process and use their
own personal ideas in creating their own work of art.
Please Note: Museum Experience Workshops can also be
scheduled during regular
museum hours for home school and school groups. Please contact
the Education Department at wsweigart@sqart.org
for fee structure and scheduling information.
- Rembrandts & Rainbows (ages 3-5): Special
multi-sensory workshops for preschoolers (4 hrs. of instruction
per month). Each workshop is different, allowing experimentation
with materials and techniques and development of critical thinking
and motor skills.
- Summer Youth Classes (ages 5-12): A series
of five classes (10 hrs. of instruction) that explore the methods
of traditional and contemporary art making. These classes are
great for young, emerging artists who love to paint, draw, and
sculpt! Classes culminate with an exhibition and reception where
parents, relatives, and members of the community can gather and
enjoy their children’s creations.

Supplies for all youth classes are provided by the Museum; smocks are
