Exhibition Overview
The
Susquehanna Art Museum will present two exhibitions beginning July 10, 2004.
Inner Circles and Alexander Calder and the Natural Cycle
will be on display through September 30, 2004. Both exhibitions explore the
circle and cyclical motifs and are presented with underwriting support from
the McCormick Family Foundation and the Department of Community and Economic
Development.
Curated by Debra Miller, Inner Circles presents six contemporary, Philadelphia-based artists as they explore the circle – giving it new meaning and substance. Artists include: David Foss, James Fuhrman, Michelle Marcuse, Antonio Puri, Vincent Romaniello, and Tremain Smith. This exhibition of abstract painting and sculpture is traveling and debuted at Kutztown University’s Sharadin Art Gallery. A catalog is also available.
Alexander Calder and the Natural Cycle will feature lithographs, tapestries, and kinetic sculpture incorporating and exploring cyclic motifs and celestial objects. Lenders to the exhibition include the Phillip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a private collector.
“We are looking forward to presenting Inner Circles and Alexander Calder and the Natural Cycle,” states Rusty Baker, Executive Director of the Susquehanna Art Museum. “Both shows give us the opportunity to learn something about ourselves from a universal subject and symbol. It is also interesting that Calder and the group of artists in Inner Circles share a connection to the Philadelphia area.”
