Overview

The Susquehanna Museum of Art is thrilled to present this exhibition of paintings by Carlos Luna. In keeping with our mission of cooperation and collaboration, this project is a welcome result of multi-organizational development from which all of our communities benefit. As Carlos Luna brought his passionate and dynamic visions from Cuba to Florida, now, we can share it with you.

Luna’s kaleidoscope of color and geometry goes beyond this world, pairing impossible realities and certain truths. It touches age-old paradigms of sexuality and mysticism, adoration and violence, and death and life. Populated by men, women, horses, and birds, these vignettes effectively capture the moments — the split seconds—of terror, rapture, fury, and love.

Vehemently pigmented and majestically scaled, this series of work represents one individual’s vision, yet, symbolizes an experience shared by hundred of thousands. This commonality, embodied by Luna’s symbolic figures and subject matter, speaks forcefully in the strongest shades of blue, black, and purple. Yet, along with the darkness, there is light. There are the glowing tinctures of orange heat and red hot passion. There is awareness of one’s self and pride.

We are pleased to join with the Polk Art Museum and The Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery in the presentation of Carlos Luna’s works. We extend our thanks to the Cisneros Capital Group, for its support of the career of Carlos Luna and its generous sponsorship of this publication; and to Claudia Luna for her assistance and guidance in bringing her husband’s work to our region. And most importantly we thank Carlos Luna,
