2009-2010 Exhibit: All Around the World: People & Places in ArtThe Susquehanna Art Museum is pleased to announce that the exhibition All Around the World: People & Places in Art will be featured on its award-winning VanGo! Museum on Wheels for the 2009-10 school year. All Around the World will feature artists who actively use ideas, themes, techniques and concepts from a variety of cultures in their artwork. The study of human geography allows us to better understand specific histories, sites and memories. Every culture, nation, and country has an interesting story to tell. A geographer’s job is to help us identify and understand the relationships between people, places and environments, just as visual artists lead us to better understand our surroundings through visual imagery. All Around the World explores the human geography of a variety of different cultures (African, American Folk Art, Arabic, Eastern European, Latin American, Native American, and Asian) and examines the relationships between humans, their surroundings and social customs. By examining the connection of human geography and art, students will acquire an increased appreciation for the art and culture found in their surroundings and develop important skills in creative problem solving and critical analysis that will serve them in future learning. Featuring drawings, paintings, photography, collage, sculpture and more from prominent contemporary artists, All Around the World is designed to suggest insight into the working methods and ideas applied by artists. All Around the World will address the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Arts & Humanities; Geography, History, Civics and more. VanGo! is a modern, fully equipped, museum on wheels. VanGo! features an award-winning interior by Alexander Design Studios of Baltimore, MD. The mission of VanGo! is to display original works of art in a mobile setting where such quality art is not usually accessible, especially to young students. At the heart of this project is a belief that an educational experience using quality art works provides viewers with real art objects, primary sources, rather than reproductions. In doing so, nuances of texture; light qualities such as color; spatial arrangements; size; and ambiance are featured to enhance learning and enjoyment. VanGo! travels to schools, community centers, and non-profit sites throughout Pennsylvania. VanGo! and staff visit both rural and urban sites, as well as migrant education summer programs, pre-schools, retirement centers, and schools for the physically impaired. Each year, VanGo! programs reach more than 25,000 people. Educational components of the VanGo! program include: an interactive assembly program, an educator’s manual that includes detailed background information on the exhibit, as well as creative activities and experiments that can be adapted to a variety of learning levels. Past VanGo! exhibitions include Art Counts: Math in Art, featuring artworks utilizing mathematical concepts, Art Tells a Story: The Narrative in Art, which explores how artists use narrative elements in their art, and Earth, Wind, Fire & Water: Science in Art, which features artists who are actively using the elements of earth, wind, fire and water in the artwork.
