VanGo! the art museum that comes to you...

Current Exhibit (2008-2009) Earth, Wind, Fire & Water: Science in Art

The Susquehanna Art Museum is pleased to announce that the exhibition Earth, Wind, Fire & Water: Science in Art will be featured on its award-winning VanGo! Museum on Wheels for the 2008-09 school year. Earth, Wind, Fire & Water examines commonalities between artist and scientist, and shows how each approach their work in a similar manner. By examining the connection of art and science, students will increase their appreciation of the natural world, and develop skills in critical analysis that will serve them well in future learning.

The work of both science and art depends mainly on interpreting nature, or the natural world. Both artists and scientists seek to find a sense of order. Many people think that artists and scientists exist in completely different worlds. In truth, many scientists bring artistry and creativity to their work, and many artists bring structure and order to theirs.

This exhibition features prominent contemporary artist actively using the elements earth, wind, fire and water in their artwork. Earth, Wind, Fire and Water is designed to suggest insight into the working methods and ideas applied by artists, and addresses the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Arts & Humanities, Science & Technology, Environment & Ecology, and History.

Artists included in the 2008-09 exhibit: Linda Billet, Milt Friedly, Eileen Goodman, Tom Holmes, John Lefelhocz, Kevin Lehman, Amy Marx, Tom Mazzullo, Phyllis Purves-Smith, Tom Scullin, Julianne Swartz, Andrew Wapinski, Dr. Stephen Young, Susan Ziegler.

VanGo! Gallery at SAM – New for 2008-09

With the opening of the Susquehanna Art Museum’s VanGo! Gallery, the Museum can now provide an important educational tool where students, educators, and more can see firsthand the quality of works included in VanGo! exhibitions, and enhance their appreciation and understanding of each year’s theme through guided tours and hands-on learning in our Creation Station classrooms.

The mission of VanGo! is to display original works of art in a mobile setting that travels to schools and community events throughout the Capital Region and beyond. VanGo! provides an important cultural arts experience in schools and communities where they may not have access quality works of art.  Artists featured in this gallery have additional original paintings, photographs, and sculptures included in this year’s VanGo! exhibit for 2008-09.  Earth, Wind, Fire & Water: Science in Art examines the connections between art and science, and provides a forum where students can develop an appreciation of the natural world, while also honing skills in critical analysis and creative problem-solving that will serve them well in future learning.

Educators, principals, PTO/PTA representatives, and other interested parties can arrange a time to come in to view the VanGo! Gallery during regular museum hours.  Teacher workshops & Youth Art Classes will also be designed around this new gallery space.  For more information, please contact Wendy Sweigart, Director of Outreach Education at 717-233-8668 x 7 or by email at wsweigart@sqart.org.
